Boris Johnson will take part in a BBC debate with his Tory leadership rivals on Tuesday but will avoid Channel 4’s on Sunday.

The firm favourite to succeed Theresa May as prime minister is expected to be replaced with an empty lectern on the stage this weekend.

In a surprise interview on BBC Radio 4’s World At One today, the former foreign secretary complained that having six people in Sunday’s debate would make it too “cacophonous” but that he was willing to take part in one on Tuesday after at least one more candidate had been eliminated.
