NEW YORK – The FDNY says a helicopter pilot has died after crash landing on the roof of a building in Manhattan.
It happened around 2 p.m. atop the 750-foot AXA Equitable Building on Seventh Avenue.
The NYPD is warning people to avoid the area of West 51st and Seventh Avenue. It says to expect emergency vehicles and traffic in the area.
In a tweet, the NYPD says a helicopter had a “hard landing” on the roof of 787 Seventh Ave. in midtown. It says an ensuing fire has been extinguished, but it is urging people to continue to avoid the area.
Officials say the pilot was believed to be the only person aboard the helicopter.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says people in the building evacuated and some reported feeling the structure shake.
The FAA says it is gathering information about the incident.
Video posted to social media appeared to show the helicopter flying erratically before the crash.
